“We want to make sure that we’ve diversified because we want to make sure that we’re growing in a sustainable way.”BUSINESS OVERVIEW
Vision Information Technology Consultants (Vision IT) is a team of 20 people spread across Arkansas, Arizona, and North Carolina. Vision IT provides program and project management, requirements definition and analysis, network engineering, systems engineering, integrated logistic support, information assurance, field service, logistic analysis, and quality control support services to various Department of Defense (DoD) and civilian agencies. During its first ten years, business was defined by a single multi-million dollar contract. In recent years, the business reported about $3M in revenue and founder Victoria Washington has since diversified Vision’s portfolio with plans to expand into the private sector. In 2017, she was selected as Arkansas’ Small Business Person of the Year.
INVEST IN MULTIPLE CONTRACTS
For Vision IT, 2012 was a defining year. “At the time, we were 100 percent overseas. That was our entire labor force,” Victoria remembers. When the decision was made to bring the troops home from Afghanistan, “It brought contractors home as well . . . It hit us drastically because we went from 100 percent to 0 percent.” By year's end revenue hovered around $75,000.
In 2015, three years and a lot of “blood, sweat, and tears” later, the business had fully recovered its revenue--bringing in a little more than $3M that year. To ensure a collapse like 2012 would never happen again to her business, Victoria set out to create a more durable business.
Thanks to the Strategic Growth Action Plan that she created as part of the Emerging Leaders program, Victoria has the tools to build a stronger scalable business. Today, Vision IT has a number of federal contracts instead of just one, expanding its’ footprint into the San Antonio, Texas area, and into the commercial space. “Right now, we’re diversified when it comes to just having multiple contracts, but as part of our strategic plan we are focusing on two (2) key elements: 1) How we can continue to increase our portfolio and 2) how we can transition some of the things that we do well in the government into the commercial space. We believe that this will be essential to our growth.”
