“I don’t [help the local community] to get media attention or whatever. I do it because it needs to be done. I do it to inspire others to help. Others that can do it, can do it, and I inspire them to do good things as well. It’s a win-win. I encourage more business people to do more because at the end of the day, when you’re dead and gone, you can’t take that money with you.”BUSINESS OVERVIEW
Washington & Sons’ installs and services cooling and heating units for both residential and commercial clients. Starting out as a one-man operation, today the business employs about 50 people at its four locations. Washington & Sons’ has expanded from its Houston headquarters to additional offices in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Georgia.
Victor is very passionate about his community, and one of the ways he has had an impact on his community is through Washington & Sons’ Beat the Heat program. He began the program after receiving a call from an elderly neighbor. Victor was touched by the story of this woman, a school teacher, who had given so much to her community but now, living on her own, could not afford basic air conditioning. He realized he would try to help in any way he could.
As a result, Beat the Heat was launched in 2000 for residents who are terminally ill or who reside in low-income neighborhoods. At no cost to the resident, Washington & Sons’ installs a window unit, usually in a bedroom. “A lot of local politicians call upon us to help people in their communities that need help.” Over the years Victor has become a recognizable face in the community, and now regularly receives requests and praise from his local congresswoman.
