BUSINESS OVERVIEW
Synergy Media Group is an 18-person team of technology designers, programmers, and technicians. They install and service audiovisual systems for mostly higher education institutions with contracts as small as $2,000 and as large as $10 million. Some of Synergy’s high-profile clients today include Stanford University, West Virginia University, and Clemson University with its new Watt Innovation Center. Recently, Synergy got their first international contract in Dubai, UAE. In nine short years, annual sales have gone from $200,000 to $5 million.

GETTING CONTRACTS
Most of Synergy’s clients are anchor institutions such as universities, so much of its work comes in the form of large contracts. Greg Carpenter admits it has not always been easy winning his contracts. First, without any prior work to showcase, you can’t standout amongst the competition. Second, banks are less likely to support the unknown: “Not many banks want to lend to a company just starting out.”

In addressing these challenges, Greg has an important piece of advice: Start out small.

“You start out small -- you do a lot of Panera Breads and places like that. You get a couple contracts and then future clients can see the work that you’ve done. Start off small. Then you’ll catch a break.”

Since catching a break years ago, “Synergy now has more than thirty contracts going at any one time.”
