“It may be fear of opening up your company to a teaming partner but, honestly, when you’re small I don’t think there’s any other way [to get federal contracts]. I think that idea of teaming--collectively using your strengths to get in front of that huge client--is key.”
BUSINESS OVERVIEW
According to CEO Darryl Britt, “Apprio focuses on federal government clients, specifically in the areas of healthcare and homeland security. We started at the intersection of health and homeland security--medical emergency response--and have now diversified into straight healthcare and straight emergency management.” Today Apprio makes an annual $30M in revenue and employs more than 250 people.

POWER OF THE NETWORK

Considering the size and focus of his business, Darryl has a few tips for small businesses looking to win federal contracts. One of those tips: When you are too small to bid and win a contract, leverage the expertise and trust of other small businesses in your network.

When Darryl took part in the 2014 Emerging Leaders program, one of his fellow business owners in the program became a valuable asset to Apprio’s long term goals. Thanks to this relationship, Darryl was connected to a contract that upped his security clearance. Now he is a more competitive candidate for future contracts.

There are many factors involved in a successful bid, but Darryl’s story shows what helps: Do not go it alone.
