“The community has been great to me and supported my business. It is only right to support the community that supports me.”BUSINESS OVERVIEW
Johnny Hollins founded J.G. Hollins Builders in 2002. Leading up to 2016, the company was building three to four homes a year. In 2016, the company grew to seven full-time employees and 30 subcontractors, and constructed 14 houses. Johnny began to second-guess his rapid rate of growth and took the City of Houston’s BuildUp Houston program, powered by Interise’s StreetWise ‘MBA’™, to learn how to manage the expansion.
SHARING THE VISION
Johnny realized that he did not own a business – he was the business. If he was not there, the company could not function. He learned how to identify the right type of talent to hire so that he could grow his own management and leadership skills and delegate to his employees. In particular, he learned to articulate his vision and share it with his employees so that the team could work towards the vision and goals together. The three-year growth plan was a major selling point for him, because he had been thinking and planning in six-month increments. He challenged himself to identify his goals and put them on paper.
These delegation skills came in handy during Harvey, when he was stuck outside of Houston, but his employees were able to run the business without him there. In the wake of the storm, J.G. Hollins Builders provided free sheetrock to dozens of families without insurance or assistance, and the business partnered with Bosslife Construction to help repair homes for flood victims. The business also held a fundraiser and plans to construct 30 homes in Independence Heights, where his business is located, at no charge to the homeowners. Johnny explained, “Our goal is to change a life because this storm was life-changing for many people.”
